Post-Accident Steps: What to Do After an Auto Accident

Have you been involved in an auto accident in Orange Park, FL or the surrounding area? Major and minor accidents are becoming more and more common as the city’s population grows and traffic patterns change. Because of that, it is important for everyone to know what to do after an auto accident – what steps should you follow, and when should you see an accident doctor?

First, make sure that everyone is ok. If there are serious injuries, call 911 immediately to get medical assistance on the way. If there are no serious injuries and the accident happened on a multi-lane highway, move all vehicles involved to the shoulder if possible. Then, call 911 to report the accident.

While you wait for the Orange Park police or the county sheriffs to arrive, you should assess yourself for injuries. However, be aware that the rush of adrenaline from the accident, and shock, can both mask any injuries that lie deeper than the skin.

Exchange your insurance information, name and contact information with the other driver while you wait. Once law enforcement arrives, give your account of the accident as clearly as you can. They will also interview the other people involved and will write up a statement. If possible, contact your auto insurance company at this time. You’ll also need to arrange to have your car towed to a mechanic shop if it is not operable.

Depending on the situation, paramedics may come to the accident scene. Even if you do not believe that you are injured, allow them to assess your condition. After you have been cleared to leave and have arrived home, continue to keep an eye on how you feel. The day after the accident is likely to be the worst – you will be stiff and sore after even a minor collision. However, watch for signs that you are experiencing anything more than minor muscle soreness. Pain in the neck or back can be a sign of deeper injury. If you experience anything other than minor aches and pains, it is best to make an appointment with an accident doctor.
